How I work

I've worked with clients for 25 years. I've also worked with teens in schools, hospitals and community mental health. I provide a non-judgmental, compassionate space where your story is heard and supported, and where you can express any part of yourself without fear of criticism. You can see me in person in Denver or online across Colorado, whichever fits your life.

Sessions with me are collaborative. You and I start with your goals.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and strength-based, attachment-based, person-centered, solution-focused and family systems approaches.

I'm also an EMDR Certified Therapist.

How I came to this work

I'm Mandy Copeland, a Colorado kid from Aurora. I went to school in Colorado to study social work. Child welfare (foster care and adoption) was my college internship and turned into my first job. As a teen I interned at the Denver Zoo. Once I realized how much math and science was needed, I shifted away from zoology.

Grand Junction was my home for several years. My clients were ranchers, trust funders and everything in between. I really enjoyed discovering what the other half of the state had to offer. A girls residential treatment center in Fruita gave me my first direct experience as a therapist.

Back in Denver I earned my state addiction certification while recruiting women for a Fetal Alcohol Syndrome project. I presented my findings at a national conference. My interest in public health led me to become a health educator with Denver Health at South High School. I counseled students on healthy relationships, pregnancy and drug prevention. I was interviewed by Colorado Public Radio about teens and marijuana. The story aired on NPR in 2014. South High introduced me to many immigrant and refugee families and their strengths and struggles.

National Jewish Health was my next stop. I worked with people living with chronic illness and athletes with breathing disorders. I remain committed to helping clients with dependence and addiction. This brings me to my private therapy practice.

I learn as much from my clients as they learn from me. This is my life's work. My favorite coping skills are napping and sunshine. For fun I like hanging out with my amazing community of people, laughing and listening to music.

What sessions are like

I see every client myself. A regular session is 50 minutes.

Your first session is usually about getting to know each other. If something pressing brings you in, I start by talking through what's necessary.

I keep what you share in therapy confidential, with the exceptions explained in my Notice of Privacy Practices (PDF).

You can bring your dog to sessions if it is house-trained and good with other dogs.
